Virupaksha Temple, HampiToday we hire bikes and ride south to the "Royal Centre" of Hampi, which contains the ruins of various royal buildings - the Queen's Baths, some other royal baths, and the majestic Elephant Stables, whose special, elephantine proportions emphasise the grandeur of the place.

After a long, hot day riding around the arid landscape we have a good dinner at the Mango Tree restaurant, hidden away in the trees in a corner of Hampi. We sit on the floor on some deep steps cut into the hillside, overlooking the river valley, with tiny tables to put plates on.
