Day 20, Margao, Goa [Sunday 23rd Deember 2007]
Previous day: Day 19, Palolem, Goa [Saturday 22nd December 2007]
Next day: Day 21, Colva, Goa [Monday 24th December 2007]
Go to Margao to look around. It's Sunday and everything is shut, including the big church. It's a bit of a dive, generally, but we do see some nice old pastel coloured Portugese colonial houses. These have usually been turned into hospitals, asylums, doctor's surgeries or hotels.
Christmas is really gearing up now - nativity scenes are being worked on under torchlight and plastic coverings at the roadside, strings of fairy lights line the roads. The verandas of houses bear bright stars hung around the lightbulbs. Today Mrs D'Souza's children put her decorations up - golden bells in the arches of the verandah, tinsel and lights all the way along the front of the house. Lights are up in the trees either side of the house. A little nativity scene at the foot of the garden steps, and a huge plastic tree in the front room. Mrs D'souza is annoyed it is so big, but it looks good.
Full moon tonight. We have dinner, a couple of beers and a stroll along the beach, splashing in the water.
