Next day: Day 144, Udaipur, Rajasthan [Thursday 24th April 2008]
We get the bus to Chittor, a town which used to be the capital of Mewar. It has a massive fort lining the top of the hill which looms over the town. The fort stretches 7km long and 4km wide. It's ramparts are filled with fairytale Rajput palaces, temples, towers and follies.
There are immense views over the surrounding plains, which look as if they have remained unchanged for hundreds of years. As the sun sets it's possible, for a moment, to imagine this place inhabited by the Rajput queen Padmini all those years ago.
That night, in the unusually pleasant, candlelit garden of our hotel, we drink some extraordinarily expensive beer.
